Final Reflection
In this module, I have learned about a lot of things, one of which is about the principles of design. I have learned that each piece of art are made of several design principles which are Gestalt Theory, Repetition, Movement, Contrast, Emphasis, Balance, Harmony & Unity, Symbol, and Word & Image.
When working on the first project which is Exercises, we are told to explore two of the principles of design. I decided to look into Repetition and Contrast. I originally chose those two because I thought that it would be easy but I found that since it is simple, it is hard to show in an illustration.
When working on the second project which is Self-Portrait, we are told to explore ourselves, learn our strength and weaknesses, our likes and dislikes, etc. Upon learning more about ourselves, we are told to make a self-portrait of ourselves. When making the sketch for this project, initially I thought that since it is a self-portrait, I should be drawing myself. However, after seeing the examples Dr Jinchi showed us, it made me come up with more possibilities. I started sketching on things that I dislike, which I thought represents myself more, like how I like to pick on my skin, get nervous easily, overthink, and overworked. I really liked that piece since I relate to it a lot. However, Dr Jinchi told me to do more sketches and I decided to sketch on the things that I favour. I ended up making a sketch which focuses on movement since I love running, and while doing so, I thought I should just make it into a small animation, to further emphasise the movement. Initially, I just did this as a sketch and did not want to finish it because it was too much work. However, when showing Dr Jinchi the sketch, she really liked that one, so I decided to finish it. It ended up being my favourite work on this course.
When working on the final project, we are told to find a UNSDG and find a reference art-piece that we need to analyse, I ended up choosing an art-piece from an art installation which I really liked. From this project, I learned to explore more ideas instead of just jumping right into the first sketch. This really opened up more possibilities to me. I learned that ideas can also come from words instead of drawings. For this, I ended up drawing a piece which I really liked, which shows the harmony of human and sea life. I ended up rushing this piece, so I know I could have done better.
In the end, I really enjoyed this subject and I managed to explore my hobby again after years of neglecting it. I have realised that if I put more effort into drawing, and actually learn properly instead of just drawing aimlessly, I could be much more than I am now. All in all, I really enjoyed this course and I am glad to have Dr Jinchi who is very kind and understanding to have helped guide me throughout.
